The Civic Virtues

The medieval Guildhall's ornate entranceway had been crafted by master artisan John Croxtone, its pillars adorned with imposing figures of Christ, Moses and Aaron, surrounded by the four Virtues standing proudly in recesses. This beautiful porch was tragically torn down in 1788, forcing the statues to be sold, although there is ongoing debate about which figure represents Temperance, Fortitude, Justice or Prudence. Miraculously, these historic relics were rediscovered in a Welsh garden as far back as 1972.
