The Charterhouse Norfolk Cloister
sketchfab
This remaining piece was part of the Great Cloister that made up the Carthusian monastery founded outside London by Sir Walter Manny. Manny also funded the plague burial site now known as Charterhouse Square. The Norfolk Cloister is a rare survival of a great Elizabethan garden gallery where guests, including Queen Elizabeth I during her visit to the Charterhouse, would promenade under its roof. During Sutton's Hospital era, the cloister was used by schoolboys for football, and its narrow dimensions led to the invention of the offside rule. The dates for the Great Cloister are 1417, while the roof and inner wall were built in 1571. Access and historical information for this model came from Kayden Rodger, Visitor Host at the Charterhouse. For more information visit www.thecharterhouse.org.
