This is a sculpture known as Soul and Body, an enigma that continues to baffle art enthusiasts. It's actually an intriguing combination of the head of Fugit Amor from The Gates of Hell, a female torso, and the body of a horse from Rodin's Monument to General Lynch. By exaggerating the stretch of the body, Rodin creates a sense of tension. The arms grasping the marble support may be an echo of the centaur throttling the Lapith on the Parthenon metope to the right, adding another layer of depth to this complex work.
