A centaur (Latin: Centaurus) is a mythological creature known for its unique combination of human and equine features. The upper body of a human and lower body of a horse define this legendary being. Centaurs were often said to have been born from Ixion, the son of Lapithes, who mated with Nephele (the cloud made in Hera's image). However, another version suggests that they are children of Centaurus, who mated with Magnesian mares. This Centaurus could be either the son of Ixion and Nephele or Apollo and Stilbe, daughter of the river god Peneus. The story further indicates that his twin brother was Lapithes, an ancestor of the Lapiths, making them warring cousins. Centaurs were said to inhabit various regions in ancient Greece, including Magnesia and Mount Pelion in Thessaly, the Foloi oak forest in Elis, and the Malean peninsula in southern Laconia. Another tribe of centaurs was believed to have lived on Cyprus, where they were fathered by Zeus after he spilled his seed on the ground in frustration over Aphrodite's elusiveness. Unlike those from mainland Greece, Cyprian centaurs had horns. The Lamian Pheres, twelve rustic daimones of the Lamos river, were set by Zeus to guard infant Dionysos but were transformed into ox-horned Centaurs by Hera's rage. They later accompanied Dionysos in his campaign against the Indians. Centaurs have appeared in Roman mythology and remain familiar figures in medieval bestiaries. The centaur's unique composition of human and horse has led many writers to portray them as liminal beings, caught between two natures embodied in contrasting myths. This duality is exemplified by their battle with the Lapiths (their kin) or their role as teachers like Chiron.
