'The Castles' Motte and Bailey Castle

'The Castles' Motte and Bailey: A Historic Gem in North Lincolnshire. Located in Barrow upon Humber, this medieval motte and bailey castle offers breathtaking views of the River Humber and The Beck, a stream that flows into it. At its core is an earthen motte standing up to 3m above ground level, surrounded by a dry moat 2m deep and 15m wide. A complex water-management system, originally fed by The Beck, subdivides a series of earthwork enclosures including bailies and stock-pens into separate areas. To the north lies an earthen bank, 20m long, 15m wide and 2m high, which would have supported the wooden bridge between the motte and the bailey to its north. This bailey measures 100m from east to west and 70m from north to south, showcasing a well-planned medieval settlement.
