The Capitoline Wolf
thingiverse
The bronze sculpture of a she-wolf nursing twin human babies, The Capitoline Wolf (Italian: Lupa Capitolina), dates back to 450 BC in Etruscan. It was initially placed before 1000 AD in front of the Lateran in Rome and later moved to Capitol Hill in 1471. In 1181, it found a permanent home at Palazzo Conservatori In. The Capitoline Wolf is now housed at The Royal Cast Collection in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Capitoline Wolf is an iconic bronze sculpture that tells the legendary story of Rome's founding. According to the myth, when Numitor, grandfather of Romulus and Remus, was overthrown by his brother Amulius, the usurper ordered the twins to be thrown into the Tiber River. However, a she-wolf rescued them and cared for them until Faustulus, a herdsman, discovered and raised them. The Capitoline Wolf has been on display since 1471 at the Palazzo dei Conservatori in Rome's historic Campidoglio, also known as Capitol Hill.
