The Bussa Emancipation Statue is a work of art created by Barbados' most renowned sculptor Karl Broodhagen, symbolizing the breaking free from slavery at Emancipation. Slavery was abolished in 1834 but was followed by a four-year apprenticeship period during which time over 70,000 men of African descent were forced to work for 45 hours without pay in exchange for living in small huts provided by plantation owners. Freedom from slavery was finally achieved in 1838 at the end of the apprentice period when Barbadians took to the streets singing a folk song that read: "Lick an Lock-up Done Wid, Hurray fuh Jin-Jin (Queen Victoria). The Queen came from England to set us free Now Lick an Lock-up Done Wid, Hurray fuh Jin-Jin". Many Barbadians refer to the statue as Bussa, a name given in honor of a slave who led a revolt against slavery in Barbados in 1816.
