Niepokorny, or Defiant, is the title of an exhibition showcasing the most notable works of renowned Polish sculptor Xawery Dunikowski against the backdrop of his life's creative stages. The exhibition celebrates 30 years of activity by the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko. Exhibition curator Joanna Torchała references the words of Eligiusz Niewiadomski, a critical member of Młoda Polska (Young Poland), to describe Dunikowski's style: "Without encouragement or applause, hunted by hostile glances from the crowd, Dunikowski swims against and fights the current, making his true art despite the social environment surrounding him." Dunikowski was undoubtedly a rebellious artist who surprised and shocked audiences throughout his extensive creative life. He was mentally and psychologically ahead of his era, and his works were labeled "Plaster Monsters" while he himself was separated from common worship and faith pursued by fellow Poles. During Young Poland, Dunikowski created symbolic sculptural groups like "Tchnienie," or A Breath of Air, "Jarzmo," or Yoke, "Macierzyństwo," or Motherhood, and "Fatum," or Fate - all regarded as twisted and bizarre.
