I fell in love with the story after seeing the 1984 movie adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel. As you might imagine, I was very excited for Denis Villenueve's version. I was incredibly pleased with the results of his vision. "The Box" scene was particularly interesting to me, and I chose to make my own version of the movie prop. Screen captures were dark in the film, so I enhanced them a little so I could assertain shapes and detail for my model. My model was created in Fusion360, and anyone who has used this tool knows that it is an extremely detailed, and hyper accurate parametric design tool. Designs that start with Fusion360 are perfect. Precice dimensions, angles and form. Those that have seen the movies know that The Box is ancient and worn. Being "the year 10191" you can imagine the wear and battle this item has seen. In order make it look the way I wanted, I decided to follow the sage advice of another favorite of mine, Adam Savage. His web-show Tested is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to making props look real. I found many great ideas in this episode on Weathering and Distressing. The tl;dr of it all is, "rough it up, use lots of paint layers, colors, and really mess it up.". My result turned out, IMHO, perfectly.
