THE BISON SKIN WITH A ‘WAR SCENE’

Here, for the first time, we publish a remarkable find from the Innokentiy P. Kuznetsov-Krasnoyarskiy collection at the TSU Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of Siberia named after Vasiliy M. Florinskiy - an extraordinary bison skin dating back to the mid-19th century. We delve into the detailed history of how this artifact arrived at the museum, shedding light on its transfer process. Our analysis of the 'war scene' depicted on the skin reveals a style and composition that strongly suggests it was not part of Native American culture. Instead, we believe it was likely created for commercial purposes, rather than being used in any traditional context.
