Who is depicted? It portrays a bird and a flower. Technical/Specification about the statue The movement was founded by Edouard Jeanneret, also known as Le Corbusier, and Amédée Ozenfant. They put forth their theory of purism in their book Après le Cubisme (After Cubism) published in 1918. They criticized the fragmentation of objects in cubism and the way it had become decorative by that time. Instead they proposed a style of painting where objects were represented as powerful basic forms stripped of detail. Fernand Léger was another key artist associated with purism. A vital element of purism was its acceptance of technology and machines, aiming to give mechanical and industrial subject matter a timeless, classical quality. Ancient Greek architecture can be seen in the fluting on the bottles in Ozenfant’s still life compositions. Purism reached its peak in Le Corbusier’s Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau (Pavilion of the New Spirit), built in 1925 for the International Exposition of Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. This was showcased with work by the three main artists and also included the cubists, Juan Gris and Jacques Lipchitz. After this, the key relationship between Ozenfant and Le Corbusier came to an end. More about the artist Léger was born in Argentan, Orne, Lower Normandy, where his father raised cattle. Fernand Léger initially studied architecture from 1897 to 1899 before moving to Paris in 1900. He supported himself as an architectural draftsman until enrolling at the School of Decorative Arts after being rejected by the École des Beaux-Arts. He still attended the Beaux-Arts as a non-enrolled student, spending three years studying with Gérôme and others while also attending the Académie Julian. Léger began to work seriously as a painter at the age of 25. At this point his work showed an influence of impressionism, seen in Le Jardin de ma mère (My Mother's Garden) of 1905, one of the few paintings from this period that he did not later destroy. A new emphasis on drawing and geometry appeared in Léger’s work after seeing the Cézanne retrospective at the Salon d'Automne in 1907.
