Irreversible inactivation of PBP3 by Meropenem, a potent β-lactam antibiotic, occurs when the compound binds to PBP3. This binding inhibits the production of peptidoglycan, ultimately leading to bacterial cell wall death. Han and colleagues, including Zaniewski, Marr, Lacey, Tomaras, Evdokimov, and Shanmugasundaram, published a groundbreaking study in 2010. Their research, "Structural basis for effectiveness of siderophore-conjugated monocarbams against clinically relevant pathogens," was featured in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (Vol. 22002-22007).
