Tosa shi tenno – The Big Four of Tosa – four samurai immortalized in stone, from the right: Nakaoka Shintaro, Sakamoto Ryoma, Takechi Zuizan, Yoshimura Torataro. All four men met a tragic end, dying between 26-31 years old. Sakamoto Ryouma (1836-67) of Tosa estate, Kouchi prefecture, became a ronin in 1862 and was brutally murdered. Nakaoka Shintarou fell in the same year, cut down at the age of 29. Takeshi Zuizan, a low-ranking Tosa samurai, goshi, faced arrest and was forced to take his own life through seppuku. Yoshimura Torataro honed his swordsmanship under Takechi Zuizan's guidance before being killed in battle.
