For 137 years, England's cricket team has clashed with Australia's in an epic battle for dominance over "The Ashes". This legendary series is named after England's shocking defeat at the hands of Australia in the summer of 1882. A tongue-in-cheek obituary published in The Sporting Times declared that English cricket would be laid to rest, its ashes sent to Australia as a symbol of defeat. When the next test series rolled around, played out in Australia during the winter of 1882-83, a small urn was presented to English captain Ivo Bligh as a personal keepsake. Over time, this humble urn has become infused with the magic of one of the world's oldest and most storied rivalries. Dubbed "the Home of Cricket", Lord's Cricket Ground is a hallowed sanctuary owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), boasting the world's oldest sporting museum and library. Within its walls, cricket's rich history is carefully preserved and documented. The Ashes Urn takes center stage in the museum, its iconic status unmatched among its treasures.
