Andrea Pisano, also known as Andrea da Pontedera, was a prominent Italian sculptor active in the 14th century whose most notable works were created in Florence, where he was heavily influenced by Giotto. As the mastermind behind the construction of the earliest of three bronze doors for the baptistery at the cathedral of Florence, completed in 1336, Andrea made history with a masterpiece featuring 20 quatrefoil panels depicting scenes from St. John the Baptist's life and 8 showcasing figures representing virtues. The figures were intricately crafted and gilded, providing a striking contrast against the smooth bronze surface they were set upon.
