Andrea Pisano, also known as Andrea da Pontedera (1270-90 - 1348-49, Orvieto, Papal States), emerges as one of Italy's leading sculptors in the 14th century. His impressive works are centered in Florence, where he comes under the artistic influence of Giotto. As documented records reveal, Andrea is credited with creating the earliest of three bronze doors for the baptistery of Florence Cathedral, a masterpiece completed in 1336. The doors boast an intricate design featuring 20 quatrefoil panels that vividly depict scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist and 8 additional panels showcasing figures of virtues. These figures are meticulously gilded and set against a sleek bronze surface.
