Philo of Alexandria's writings, dating back to around 20 BCE – 50 CE, contain a notable account regarding the pre-Mashtots Armenian alphabet. According to Philo, Metrodorus of Scepsis, a renowned Greek philosopher and historian from approximately 145 BCE – 70 BCE, had his work "On Animals" translated into Armenian. As a close friend and court historian of Armenian emperor Tigranes the Great, Metrodorus also penned an account of the emperor's life. Meanwhile, Hippolytus of Rome, a third-century Roman theologian, noted in his Chronicle that Emperor Severus Alexander (reigned 208-235 CE) lived during a time when nations like the Armenians possessed their own distinct alphabet.
