The Argive Heraion

The sacred site of Hera is situated atop a gentle slope between the towns of Argon and Mycenae, boasting a rich history as a major cult center. The initial temple dedicated to Hera was constructed around the 7th century BC, likely replacing an older structure known as an oecus or small shrine, as evidenced by a clay model unearthed during excavations that dates back to the early 7th century BC. This original 7th-century temple met its demise, only to be replaced by a stunning new Doric peripteral temple built in honor of Hera by the renowned architect Eupolemos of Argos between 420-410 BC on a lower-lying terrace than its predecessor.
