The Aptian Marizal Fm in the Cargueira Range

The Cargueira Range sits atop the southern border of the Raso da Catarina Ecological Station in NE-Bahia, Brazil. Here, the Marizal Formation is marked by massive inclined layers of heterolithic strata that are abruptly cut off by conglomerate deposits - a feature not entirely clear in the 3D model due to its low resolution. These fluvial deposits rise up to 30 meters high and stretch for 500 meters along sandstone-dominated walls, while east-west oriented deformation bands can be seen in the 3D model. To learn more about this region, consult Freitas et al.'s study from 2017, which delves into Aptian sedimentation within the Recôncavo-Tucano-Jatobá Rift System and its tectonic and paleogeographic importance as published in Journal of South American Earth Sciences, Volume 80, pages 460-481.
