The Via Appia, Rome's pioneering route, stretched from Rome to Brindisi, Italy's southeast region, showcasing its unmatched significance as one of the earliest and most crucial Roman roads during the ancient republic era. Its importance is vividly expressed by Statius' recording: "Appia longarum… regina viarum" or "the Appian Way, queen of the long roads". The road was named after Appius Claudius Caecus, Rome's renowned censor, who initiated and completed its first section as a military route to the south in 312 BC during the tumultuous Samnite Wars.
