The Gospel of Luke starts its story about Mary's life with the Annunciation, when Gabriel the angel appears to her and tells her that she has been chosen by God to be Jesus' mother. The canonical gospels say that Mary was present at Jesus' crucifixion and is shown as a member of the early Christian community in Jerusalem. According to Catholic and Orthodox teachings, after Mary's earthly life ended, her body went straight to Heaven; this event is known in Western Christianity as the Assumption.
