The Angel Gabriel From The Annunciation
myminifactory
This angel would be part of a scene depicting the Annunciation, where the Virgin Mary was likely present. The raised right hand and pointed forefinger suggest a reference to God the Father or the Holy Spirit's presence. The angel probably once held a scroll in his left hand with written text. The sculpture's style is reminiscent of earlier traditions from the 13th century, characterized by sweetly smiling figures found at Reims Cathedral. Unusual iconography, such as the angel approaching from the right, can be seen in illuminated manuscripts after 1415. The carving style and painted Annunciations suggest a date between 1415 and 1450.
