The Amazing Dr. Nim is a toy created by John Thomas Godfrey and produced by Education Science Research (E.S.R., Inc.) in the mid-1960s. This remarkable device consists of a marble-powered plastic computer capable of playing the game of Nim with precision. The machine selects its moves through the action of marbles falling through the levers, showcasing an intelligent combination of mechanics and technology. The game board is based on the mechanical Digi-Comp II digital computer, another innovative creation by Godfrey. This board features memory switches that hold bits of data, allowing for complex calculations to take place. Three lobed levers set the start position, while a fourth lever functions as an 'equalizer' option, enabling the player to win with perfect gameplay. The last lever indicates whose turn it is, either the human or Dr. Nim's. Gameplay instructions can be found in the manual that comes bundled with the game, available online for reference. Additionally, several online resources provide valuable insights into the game, including a video tutorial and an article discussing its relevance in today's digital world. The model offered here is a 2/3rd scale replica of the original Dr. Nim, measuring approximately 210 mm x 205 mm. This reduction in size makes the game more accessible to 3D printers, while still maintaining its authenticity. The design has been carefully adapted to accommodate modern technologies and available information. I would like to express my gratitude to Jaap Scherphuis and Charles E. Leiserson for providing valuable pictures and information that helped bring this model to life. Recently, I acquired a vintage Dr. Nim, which allowed me to inspect the original game's mechanics in detail. The only modification made was adjusting the angle of the game board, determined by the Hinge Stoppers, to approximately 30 degrees.
