The Adoration of the Magi

Four reliefs crafted by Nicolas Bachelier originate from a massive altarpiece situated within the Dalbade, which met its demise in 1741. Notably, these four pieces are the sole remnants known to exist: The Annunciation (Inv. D 1980 1 1), The Nativity (Inv. D 1980 1 2), The Adoration of the Magi, and Presentation in the Temple (Inv. D 1980 1 4). The strict adherence to a canon of ideal proportions in the depiction of bodies, coupled with the ornate costumes worn by holy characters and the intricate compositions set against Antique architectural backdrops, clearly indicate a significant assimilation of Italian Renaissance artistic techniques.
