Sandro Botticelli crafted this "tondo" around 1470-5. The circular shape may have derived from the "desco da parto", a painted plate given to mothers after childbirth as a gift. To create a cohesive composition within a round space, artists like Botticelli had to focus on centralizing their subject matter. Botticelli was one of the first painters to arrange the Adoration in this way, contrary to earlier depictions where figures flowed across the picture plane, as seen in his own early "Adoration" work now held in the Collection.
