The Martini-Henry rifle, utilized by the British Army for three decades, served in various locations such as South Africa, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. It was employed during the defense of Rorke's Drift in 1879. Although its production ceased in 1889, many rifles still remain in use today. Even United States Marines discovered three Martini-Henry rifles in Taliban weapons caches recently. Designed in 1870, this powerful rifle was manufactured by multiple companies from 1871 to 1889. Estimates on the total production range from 500,000 to 1,000,000 units; however, the accuracy is uncertain due to numerous high-quality replicas made in India and neighboring countries. The rifle's ammunition, a 0.452-inch lead bullet, was enclosed in a paper patch, expanding its diameter to .460 to .469-inch. The cartridge case was ejected to the rear when the lever was operated. Later variants used 0.303-inch bullets, and the production of 0.45 bullets ceased. A skilled rifleman could fire approximately 12 to 14 rounds per minute. Measuring 1245mm in length with a 840mm steel barrel, the rifle featured heptagonal rifling with seven grooves and one turn in 560mm. Weighing 3.83 kg, it was equipped with a socket-type spike Pattern 1876 bayonet, also known as the lunger, with an overall length of 635mm.
