Thaumasite
sketchfab
The crystal structure of thaumasite is characterized by a unique arrangement of calcium carbonate and sulfates in a framework of sodalite cages, resembling a repeating pattern of hexagonal prisms linked together to form an intricate network of tunnels and channels. This complex structure allows the mineral to incorporate large amounts of water within its crystalline lattice, resulting in an unusually high density for a sulfate-bearing mineral. The presence of these cavities also enables thaumasite to absorb and retain moisture from its surroundings, giving it a tendency to undergo hydration reactions when exposed to humid environments.
