That Lazy Machinist Bench Block!
thingiverse
One of the things I've been eager to share for quite some time is the connection between classical machining and 3D printing, as they essentially serve the same purpose. CNC or classical machining is a subtractive process, while 3D printing is additive; however, the work-flows remain identical from **CAD** (Computer Aided Design) to **CAM** (Computer Aided Manufacture) and ultimately production. As I delved deeper into this topic, I stumbled upon That Lazy Machinist (see more here: http://www.thatlazymachinist.com/) who made a series of blueprints available online (see more here: http://diy3dtech.com/thatlazymachinistblueprints to download them), and I decided to convert them into 3D prints to demonstrate the interrelations between these disciplines. So, the first project I chose was the Bench Block or Anvil. This multipurpose bench tool converts well to 3D printing as it's designed to use a punch out pin (i.e., the hole in the top) as well as hold round stock with the 45-degree bevel across the top. You'll find them used quite extensively in gun-smithing and similar industries where there are many pins that need to be inserted or removed, reducing the chance of marring the object when inserting or removing the pin. This one was printed in PETG (see more here: https://amzn.to/2TruUln) with the top annealed using a heat gun for added strength. I would also suggest Bridge Nylon (see more here: https://amzn.to/2S2LMSN) for extra durability; if it fails after some time, simply print a new one! That's the beauty of additive manufacturing!
