Thalia

Thalia, spelled Thaleia, was the Muse who commanded comedy and idyllic poetry with authority. In this context her name signifies thriving, because the accolades in her songs thrive through time. She was the offspring of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the eighth-born of nine Muses. According to pseudo-Apollodorus, she and Apollo were the parents of the Corybantes. Other ancient sources, however, assigned different parents to the Corybantes. She was depicted as a young woman with an ecstatic demeanor, crowned with ivy, wearing boots and grasping a comic mask in her hand. Many of her statues also hold a bugle and a trumpet (both used to amplify the actors' voices in ancient comedy), or occasionally a shepherd's staff or a wreath of ivy.
