The TGV Sud-Est, also known as the TGV PSE (Paris - South East) or TGV SE, is the first generation of TGV trains operated by SNCF. It is characterized particularly by its original orange livery. The cars were built as early as 1978 and entered commercial service in 1980 (following a testing campaign), to ensure, among other things, the Paris - Lyon TGV at the opening of the LGV Sud-Est in 1981. In addition, a three-course version was created to serve Switzerland; all elements concerned have been retired since 2012. Also since 2012, the two-course trains are being progressively withdrawn from service. The 88, which served as a prototype in 1988 for the study of the TGV Atlantic motorization (it bore then a special livery, that is to say remaining orange except the median band, which becomes blue in anticipation of the Atlantic livery)39 - it establishes at this occasion an unofficial speed record, 408.4 km/h - , was then transformed into a three-course train 1181 (this last one being since retired)13. Another particularity, is that in the framework of this study, the locomotive 23176 (then numbered 02301) had previously circulated alone, between Angoulême and Bordeaux, from March to May 19871
