On February 26, 1981, the TGV Sud-Est train no. 16 of the SNCF reached 380 kilometers per hour on the high-speed line Paris-Sud-Est north of Pasilly in the Yonne. The voltage was increased to 29 kV (instead of 25 kV), and the wheels were larger in diameter, and the gear ratio between the motors and the wheels was also increased. The mechanical tension of the catenary was also increased to raise its critical speed (speed of propagation of waves caused by pressure from the pantograph on the contact wire). This train underwent a type 1 renovation on October 21, 1999. The number 100 of the TGV 100 operation referred to the target speed of 100 meters per second (360 kilometers per hour).
