Vibrant rugs would have blanketed the floors of Ashurbapinal's palace. This stone slab provides a glimpse into how they once shone. Part of a threshold from the throne room, it is intricately carved with patterns that mirror those found on expertly woven carpets. Alternating lotus flowers and buds form an outer border. An inner border of rosettes frames a pattern of interconnected circles representing blossoms. North Palace, Nineveh, Iraq From the 'I am Ashurbapinal' exhibition at The British Museum, 2019
