The four-letter biblical name of the God of Israel, consisting of the tetragrammaton, is יהוה‬ in Hebrew and YHWH in Latin script. Religiously observant Jews replace this Hebrew name with Adonai, Hakadosh Baruch Hu, or HaShem when speaking about or to the God of Israel. The four consonants that comprise the tetragrammaton - y, h, w, and h - serve as vowel markers in unpointed biblical Hebrew. Vowel markers, also known as matres lectionis, allow vowels to be ambiguous based on the consonant's position in a word. Two of the consonants in the tetragrammaton act as vowel markers while two are silent or indicate the correct pronunciation. Josephus describes the sacred name of God as being made up of four vowels. In order for Jews to correctly pronounce YHWH without making any reference to its divine origin, Masoretes inserted vowel marks several centuries later. To make this reading less complicated for the reader, a qere is created that reads like the consonants written but not how they were meant to be spoken in biblical Hebrew language. One example of these practices involves when readers come across a text indicating יהוה‬ with two y's next to each other in certain contexts: these characters should both spell 'eh', forming the sound found when Yehovah or Adonai is read out loud and not YHVH, Yhvh or any combination thereof that refers directly to YHV.
