Procedural tests with Blender: Create a randomized smooth curve as the path, then craft a randomized spiky curve as the contour. Use the contour as a bevel object to shape the path. Select face loops based on a "smoothness criteria" that's still in development. Assign different materials to distinct face loops for added depth. Optionally, shrink or extrude and shrink some face loops to optimize the emission material.
