The Wardenclyffe Tower, or Tesla Tower, was an early wireless transmission station constructed by Nikola Tesla in Shoreham, New York between 1901 and 1902. Intended to transmit messages, telephony, and even facsimile images across the Atlantic Ocean, the tower's design was based on Tesla's theories of using the Earth as a conductor for signals. However, when Tesla sought to scale up the facility and incorporate his ideas of wireless power transmission in order to compete with Guglielmo Marconi's radio-based telegraph system, J.P. Morgan, the project's primary backer, refused further funding. As a result, additional investments could not be found and the project was abandoned in 1906. The tower was ultimately demolished for scrap in 1917, with foreclosure proceedings following in 1922. For five decades after Tesla's vision was thwarted, Wardenclyffe served as a processing facility producing photography supplies before undergoing hazardous waste cleanup in the 1980s and 2000s. In 2013, a grassroots campaign succeeded in purchasing the property with plans to build a museum dedicated to Nikola Tesla's life and work.
