Nikola Tesla designed Wardenclyffe Tower (1901â1917), also known as the Tesla Tower, for commercial trans-Atlantic wireless telephony, broadcasting, and demonstrations of wireless power transmission in Shoreham, New York. It was never operational, however, before being demolished in 1917. Built to be near James S. Warden's resort community on Long Island about sixty miles from Manhattan, this western lawyer and banker purchased the land that Wardenclyffe-On-Sound now occupied. Believing a "Radio City" would materialize once Tesla's "world system" was put into action, Warden gave him 200 acres to build near the railroad tracks, with space for a laboratory facility alongside the wireless tower.
