terraPin 2HT Stereo Pinhole Camera 120 film
thingiverse
This is an extended version of the terraPin 6X6, engineered to capture two simultaneous exposures side by side on medium-format 120 film. This camera shares many small components with the original terraPin, with a few distinct parts unique to 2HT. It makes two 56mm by 56mm exposures, spaced by 61mm, which is essentially the inter-pupil distance for most adults. The camera is designed for two 0.30mm pinholes, with a focal length of 50mm at f/167. To view stereo photographs, you can "trick your eyes" while looking at adjacent prints, or use a viewer designed for either slides or prints. Included are STL files for 80X140mm frames that will work with the Holga 3D slide viewer and others. To view sample stereo photographs (from my first 3 rolls), view in full screen. You will need to cross your eyes (really) until you see three images. The center image will be 3D, like a Viewmaster slide set. It's amazing. CAD renders show shutter blades that open and close with a parallel throw, the original idea being to connect them with a crosspiece so that they could be operated simultaneously. I abandoned that idea for reasons of precision, stability, and durability. The shutter blades now move in opposite directions for a balanced motion to minimize camera motion during fast exposures. A friend gave me a link to this application, StereoPhoto Maker. I have only begun playing with this utility, but I can tell you it runs well with WINE on Linux. I used it to compose the stereogram photos in the gallery. It also makes "Anaglyphs", the red/blue 3D images that hearken back to 3D drive-in movies. Print Settings Printer Brand: LulzBot Printer: TAZ 4 Resolution: Dimensioned for .25mm layers Infill: 30-50% for durability and light proofing Notes: All parts are oriented on plate for optimal printing without support. Test your PLA for opacity BEFORE you print your camera. I have only found one PLA that is opaque enough for real photographic use - SHAXON 3mm black PLA. If you find another, please let me know. Test it with the brightest flashlight you can find. A 2mm thick plate should not show any light through it. Post-Printing Pieces that mate and move may need some coaxing into the right shape and/or dimension. I find that ordinary metal milling files work well for this and they come in very small sizes. I tap the bolt holes that the shutters spin about. I use a 3mm tap predrilled with 3/32 inch drill bit by hand. The assembly of the various parts should be obvious by virtue of shape and the assembly pictures that I will invariably be delinquent in posting.
