Terrafugia's TF-X, a groundbreaking innovation in aviation and automotive industries, seamlessly combines features from both domains. Its design is characterized by an aesthetically pleasing appearance while addressing stringent safety requirements from the automotive sector and providing structural and mechanical elements enabling it to fly. The gullwing doors, front trunk, LED headlights, exterior navigation lights for airborne use, stadium seating, and passenger-side steps are standout design features. The TF-X's carbon monocoque passenger cell is lightweight yet robust, meeting stringent safety standards. It incorporates innovative elements such as twin 600hp electric motor pods mounted on folding wings, a compact 300hp engine powering rear wheels and the thrust fan, and a transaxle system eliminating front drive shafts and differentials. The engine is located behind the passenger compartment for optimal weight distribution and forward sight angles. Cooling systems are strategically placed for efficient heat dissipation. Inside, the TF-X adopts an automotive layout, ensuring familiarity and ease of use. Stadium seating boosts rear visibility by 8 inches while also providing space for battery cells and fuel tanks. The front trunk can accommodate two large suitcases. The exterior lighting complies with both FAA and DOT specifications. Despite its complex design, the TF-X fits within standard highway lane widths and dimensions when in car mode. The designer is open to further collaboration with Terrafugia as the concept evolves.
