Get ready for the Terrafugia TF-X, the world's first practical consumer land-air vehicle. This innovative flying car can drive or fly comfortably over long distances on roads or in the sky. Powered by a turbocharged 500hp petrol engine and a 450hp electric motor, both located at the rear of the vehicle under the wings for optimal weight distribution, this hybrid vehicle boasts a maximum cruising air speed of 550 km/h (3x Cessna 172) and a land speed of 320 km/h when wheel-driven. It can also achieve a maximum range of 3400 km in the air and 1500 km on land. The TF-X features two electric motors located in the wing pods, which can rotate up to 90 degrees for shorter takeoffs. These motors are responsible for lift, thrust, and forward motion. The propellers fold down via a simple push rod system and the entire wing assembly retracts by 20", then folds for easy storage. The TF-X's design incorporates a large center mast that supports the wings and also acts as a gas tank, while batteries are housed under the cockpit and up into the rear quarter. The overhanging wing design offers optimal layout and clearance for rocks and debris in car mode (land configuration).
