Thousands of such terracotta masks were uncovered in the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia. Most of them originally sported vibrant colors. A wide variety of faces are depicted: satyrs, gorgons, unattractive and wrinkled faces ('warriors') and caricatures. Such masks have a rich history in the Near East and stand as a notable example of foreign influence at Sparta. The masks may have been utilized in the cult of Artemis, possibly during ritual dancing or drama; they could be held or secured to the head with strings, as some masks feature perforations around the edge.
