Terracotta Army

The Terracotta Army is a collection of intricately crafted sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. This impressive display of funerary art was buried with the emperor in 210-209 BCE to serve as his protective escort into the afterlife. Discovered by local farmers in Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi province in 1974, these terracotta figures date back to approximately the late third century BCE. The tallest of the figures are the generals, standing tall among their ranks. Warriors, chariots and horses make up a significant portion of the Terracotta Army. Estimates suggest that over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses were buried in three pits nearby Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other non-military figures, including officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians, were also discovered in separate pits.
