Terracota D-uplo compatible Shingle roof, variable size and shingle tilt
thingiverse
Update: Some small bugfixes suggested by @Neon22 have been applied to roof_terracotta_EB_mod2.scad. Same Non-commercial license applies. DOWNLOAD HINGES: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1440521 Terracotta shingle roof that can have size and shingle tilt via parameters. Details can be found on my blog:http://opengeolog.com/tech/2016/03/23/duplo-compatib…a-shingle-roof/ Settings Size: The size of the entire build is controlled by two variables length and width, which I must admit have somewhat unusual spellings but that's what they're called. Note: use length=9; and width=4 as maximum, because setting these values any higher will likely lead to unstable behavior. Terracotta shingles These are created using a clever product of difference between two cylinders. The size, length, and pitch of the terracotta singles can be controlled individually, with 6 degrees being the value I used for shingle_tilt. OR stands for outer radius, IR for inner, and h simply denotes the length of the cylinder. Once you decide to compile this project, it may take quite a while to get an STL file. It will seem stuck at two parts somewhere between 60 -70% and 90-100%. Just be patient! Please respect the licence and do NOT use for commercial use under any circumstances. Print Settings Printer: Prusa i3 homebrew Resolution: 0.3 Infill: PLA Notes: I used a 1.75 PLA (eBay) with .3mm resolution, and added support to the base to prevent sagging, which seemed to work pretty well. A block 3x5 printed close to 13hrs!!! on my home made printer. Print quality was pretty decent. Post-Printing 1st and Second Layer, below anti sag supports. Butom anti sag design Shingles on the shingle roof First print 5x3. Took 12h 47mins to print How I Designed This OpenSCAD instructions: The design is coded in OpenSCAD and modular. The only things that need to be modified are length and width to set size, and shingle_tilt. There's also a pretty rich variable section that can be played with and almost anything can be changed and customized. Please change with care - some parameters were calculated, some measured and implemented, and few determined empirically through experimentation.
