Tensegrity structures
thingiverse
I've come across Tensegrity structures by Buckminster Fuller, namely the 6 strut sphere and 12 strut cuboctohedron models. I'm currently working on perfecting the icosahedron design, feel free to remind me if you're interested. Some suggestions for the build process: Print the unit pieces in multiple colors to give it a more vibrant look. Always orient the first layer print downwards to avoid any structural weaknesses. I've discovered a minor error in the cuboctohedron's design which I'm trying to fix. Don't worry, it won't affect the overall stability of the structure too much. To assemble the Tensegrity model, you'll need some screws (metal or plastic will work) and possibly a tap to secure them in place. As for built-in hinges, be sure to clean up the excess material with an x-acto knife carefully to ensure proper functionality.
