Tensegrity is a controversial word for an idea, popularized by Buckminster Fuller, and brought to Fuller by his student. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_Snelson . The idea is that durable, in fact much stronger than they appear, structures can be formed where the forces of compression, and tension, are carried by separate elements.
