The Order of St. Augustine, whose members are known as Augustinians, was founded by Pope Innocent IV in Rome in 1244. The Temple of St. Augustine in the city of La Paz is the only example of religious architecture preserved from the period of the Viceroyalty of the 17th century. Construction began in 1598 under the charge of builder Santiago de Vaca, and its design includes three covered naves by vaults.
