This small temple situated on the banks of the Tiber River was built in honor of the Roman god Portunus, who protected rivers and seaports. Originally a deity associated with doors, Portunus's role shifted as the meaning of "portus" evolved to harbor protection. Constructed from tufa and travertine blocks, which were initially coated with a thin layer of stucco, this structure remains remarkably well-preserved due to its conversion into a Christian church in the 9th century. The architectural style blends Etruscan and Greek influences, featuring a porch with freestanding columns reminiscent of Greek temples, but with slender engaged Ionic columns on the sides and back, characteristic of the "pseudoperipteral" design.
