Tell Halaf is a renowned archaeological site situated in northeastern Syria's Al Hasakah governorate, mere steps from the Turkish border, directly opposite Ceylanpınar. This site marked the initial discovery of a Neolithic culture, now famously known as the Halaf culture, distinguished by its exquisite glazed pottery adorned with intricate geometric and animal designs. The site dates back to the 6th millennium BCE when it served as the capital city of the Hittites before later becoming the seat of the Aramaean city-state of Guzana or Gozan in the 10th century BCE. By the close of the 9th century BCE, the city and its surroundings had been absorbed into the Assyrian Empire. During the tumultuous Syrian Civil War, the People's Protection Units successfully claimed control over the area.
