Halaf is situated in the Al Hasakah governorate of northeastern Syria, close to the Turkish border. This location gave rise to the Halaf culture, which thrived in northern Syria during the 7th millennium. In 1899, Max von Oppenheim, a German diplomat, first spotted the site while conducting an assessment for the Baghdad Railway project. He later revisited and excavated the area from 1911 to 1913 and again in 1929.
