The Grips can hold phones with a case up to 16mm thick. At the back are tabs inside the opening for attaching rubber bands to pull the grips together against the phone. I use both tabs to attach 2 rubber bands for stronger pull. The Right Grip has an opening to attach a Mayflash Magic-NS adapter (https://mayflash.com) to connect the JoyCons to my Android phone as JoyCons aren't fully supported in certain apps without rooting the phone. Use Switch Pro mode on the adapter. I also use a right angle USB-C adapter and magnetic tip, which is not required but makes it easier to install/remove the phone without removing the Right JoyCon.
