Telescopic Light Saber

On Friday, November 20th, a staggering 30 million people held their collective breath as they witnessed the trailer for the next Star Wars movie. As designers, we were caught off guard by a revolutionary new configuration of the lightsaber unveiled in an awe-inspiring (and fiercely debated) scene featuring a mysterious Sith Lord trekking through a snowy forest. As makers, we couldn't resist the urge to investigate this "crossguard" design for ourselves and determine whether it was a sound configuration or not... So we set out to build one, enlisting the help of our army of 3D printers. Of course, the ominous tone of the movie sequence and the lack of detail on the weapon itself left plenty of room for imagination and interpretation. With dozens of 3D printable lightsabers already available for download online, we decided to create a model that would be completely customizable. Our innovative modular system allows for hundreds of configurations, ranging from Yoda's iconic lightsaber to Darth Maul's infamous blade.
